Privacy policy

Shelf & Shed is an app for keeping track of what you have and where you keep it. It is published and operated by ScaleSolving LLC (“we”). This policy explains what we collect when you use the app and this website, why, and the choices you have.

The short version: we collect what the app needs to work, we don't sell your information, we don't show ads, and the app has no analytics or tracking tools. You can download or delete your data from the app at any time.

What we collect

Your account

• Your email address, and your name if you add one or sign in with Apple.
• Sign-in records: which devices are signed in, with their device type, IP address and last activity, so you can see and sign out devices in the app.
• If you turn on two-step verification, the setup for your authenticator app.

What you put in the app

• Your households, the people in them, and invite codes you create.
• Your places and items: names, amounts, units, categories, expiry dates, notes such as brand and size, and your shopping list.
• A history of changes (for example “used 2”), including who made each change and, for changes made by asking, the words you used. This history powers Undo and the recent changes list.
• Photos you take in the app of shelves or items, and what was read from them.

Usage limits

We count how many questions each account asks per day, to keep the service fair and affordable.

How the features use your information

Asking

When you ask a question or tell the app what you used, your request and the list of your household's places and items are sent through OpenRouter to an AI model provider (currently OpenAI) to work out the answer. Spoken requests are first turned into text by your phone's speech recognition, which runs on the device when your phone supports it and otherwise uses your phone maker's speech service (Apple or Google). Your recent conversation is stored only on your device.

Photos

When you snap a shelf, the photos, the place's name and the items already logged there are sent through OpenRouter to an AI model provider to list what's in the picture. You review the list before anything is saved. The app only uses its own camera; it does not read your photo library.

Barcodes

When you scan a barcode, only the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts to look up the product name.

Offline copy and reminders

The app keeps a copy of your household's places and items on your device so it works without a connection. Reminders are scheduled on your device; we don't send push notifications. Signing out removes this data from the device.

Who we share it with

We share information only with the services that run Shelf & Shed, and only for that purpose:

• Supabase hosts our database, sign-in and photo storage (in the United States).
• OpenRouter, and the AI model provider it routes to (currently OpenAI), process questions and photos as described above.
• Open Food Facts receives barcode numbers.
• Apple handles Sign in with Apple if you choose it.
• Resend sends our emails, such as sign-in codes.
• Vercel hosts this website.

People in your household can see the household's places, items, history and each other's email addresses. We may also disclose information if the law requires it. We never sell your information.

This website

If you join the waitlist, we keep your email address with Resend to tell you when the app launches. You can unsubscribe from any of those emails. The website doesn't use analytics or advertising cookies.

Keeping and deleting your information

We keep your information while you have an account. In the app, Settings → Account and security has Download my data, which gives you a copy of your account, households, items and history, and Delete account.

Deleting your account removes your account and every household where you are the only member, including its places, items, history and photos. In a household you share with others, the household stays for them, and the changes you made stay in its history without your name.

Security

Your information is sent over encrypted connections, and every household's data can only be read by its members. Signing a device out cuts off its access right away. You can add two-step verification in the app.

Children

Shelf & Shed isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, download or delete your information, or to object to how we use it. You can do most of this in the app. For anything else, email support@shelfandshed.com and we'll respond within 30 days.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top, and for significant changes we'll tell you in the app or by email.
